Presidential Update 6/6/11

Hey everyone!

A few things I'd like to talk about in this update. First of all, MCOM is planning an April Fools Concert on April 1st from 1-2pm in the Recital Hall. We need musicians to participate, so if you have a comedic, music-related act or piece, please sign up at the MCOM bulletin board, located on the ground floor of Fine Arts. To open the concert, we will have a performance by the Brass Methods Class and a mystery double bass trio piece. Second, t-shirt order forms are available outside the Recital Hall during forum.
A few things we are planning: we are going to try to finish up the bulletin boards relatively soon. We will be planning the time to finish them in our upcoming meeting on Wednesday March 6. Also, we are going to plan a Practice-a-thon for April. Stay tuned and come to the meetings to give your input!

Music Council of Majors, President

Presidential Update 2/12/11

Hey all!

It appears that the 5:20 time for Music Council of Majors weekly meeting works for very few people. Now, for a student organization, we are going to need students to be able to attend. SO, I have made an executive decision to move the meeting to 12:30 on Wednesdays outside of the Recital Hall (that's free hour, plus it gives you time to grab some grub :-)

Can't wait to see your beautiful faces!

Ellen Green
Music Council of Majors, President

Come to have your voice heard, help out, and hang out with the most awesome music majors in the department!

Your "Prez",

Weekly MCOM Update:

Hi all!

This is your Music Council of Majors President, writing to inform you of the new and exciting happenings pertaining to MCOM. I will be writing these updates once a week to let you know what is going on with MCOM, so that even if you are unable to attend the meetings you can still know what is going on.
We are working on a few projects that I will outline here. First, we are planning to fix up the bulletin boards on the ground floor of Fine Arts and outside the Recital Hall. In a couple of weeks MCOM will be hosting an event open to anyone to put up all the new material. If you are interested in helping to design the bulletin boards, please e-mail Yoshi Horiguchi at hyoshi1@umbc.edu.
Also, we are receiving funding from the SGA for T-shirts for the members of MCOM. Julian (the designer of this website) has created a design and will be placing the order soon. We will also be creating an order form for music majors for UMBC Music Department t-shirts.

Your President,
Ellen Green

Meeting Minutes 10-20-10

Minutes:
1:40- SGA won't fund bulletins knowing they belong to music department but we're not sure they do. So Ellen is talking to Dr. Richards.
1:41- Blog stuff, new music appreciation article? Also shirts, we're getting shirts
1:44 – Photos for website.
1:47 – Field trip thing? Another concert on nov 12th BSO.
1:50 – Fun events like movies

Meeting Minutes 10-13-10

1:22 - T-shirts. Logo, form. E-mail everyone in department - first come first serve depending on quanity. Wearing shirt every wednesday.
1:29 - Sugg box, using a tissue box and decorate it.
1:29 - Music party on friday night at Yoshi’s. Nanticoke 113. Saturday Night.
1:31 - Bulletin boards, asking money? Yoshi has to prepare quota.

Minutes 9-29-10

2:04 Suggestion Box. Decorated, perhaps to match bulletin boards? Have sheets and a pencil. Cull them on the way in to MCoM, bring up good suggestions from students. This box could be stored backstage and brought out for all events in FA118.
2:06 Events/Field Trip(?) Committee. Plan events, get permission etc., advertise said events and work with advertising committee. "Under $20" events and trips.
2:08 Advertising Committee. Talk to SEB/Commonvision. (This has been done!)
2:09 Bulletin Board Committee: Drs.Richards, Caracciolo. Create a template for the rest of the boards with the same type of design. Eight-ish people to go ahead and finish the rest of them.
2:14 Assignments - Allocation of various responsibilities to committee leaders.
2:25 Meeting Adjourned

Other topics discussed:
-A weekly interview/article type thing for this blog? That'd be way more interesting than occasional announcements and meeting minutes!
-Everyone involved in MCoM should try to get everyone else involved! If you're reading this and you aren't involved, come to the next meeting- you don't need to make a huge time commitment.

Current Topics of Discussion:
-Holding another Practice-a-thon and/or 24 Hours of Music type event. Perhaps on Main St. in Commons.
-Bulletin Boards. The consensus has been that the MCoM Board looks excellent and should serve as a template.
-Advertising MCoM Meetings within department to increase attendance.
-Advertising concerts with flyers across campus: SEB calendar? handing out flyers at busy lunch time in commons?
-Photographs of officers and members for bulletin board
-Sidewalk Sign of upcoming events
-Reslife advertising?
-Discussion of audition scheduling at the beginning of the semester
-Explanation locker use, etc. to incoming freshmen.
-Pre-Graduate informal prep course?

Recently Discussed Issues

    Meeting of March 31, 2010

- New Music. Possibility of talking to department heads about increasing variety of performances to include more traditional, tonal, Western music. Classical music is more readily available off campus, discussion of facilitation of attendance of off-campus performances.
- Mirrors in practice rooms. This would not entail only the purchase of mirrors, but also safety/liability concerns. Major renovation concerns are currently being put aside because of new Fine Arts building being underway.
- How to spread word about clean up party, April 11th, Sunday, 11am-3pm. It can run longer if necessary. Sweeping, vacuuming. Brillo pads, all purpose cleaners. Clean dressing room? Repaint steps, stage. Apply lubricant to seat hinges to prevent squeaking. (Ellen made announcement at forum.)
- Possibility of advocating for inclusion of music software (Sibelius, Finale) in bookstore's software program?
- Discussion of student feelings toward Music 358.
- Discussion of Percussion Methods in comparison to other methods classes. It is not a majors-only class, and therefore most of the class is not how to teach young students, but rather how to play rhythms.

    Meeting of March 24, 2010

- Final edits to draft of Constitution
- Possibility of Clean Up party in recital hall? (confirmed)
- Council members to be interviewed as part of review in April.
- Tell all forum attendees and members of website how to get involved with Council.
