Presidential Update 6/6/11

bassbuddy — Sun, 03/06/2011 - 19:13

Hey everyone!

A few things I'd like to talk about in this update. First of all, MCOM is planning an April Fools Concert on April 1st from 1-2pm in the Recital Hall. We need musicians to participate, so if you have a comedic, music-related act or piece, please sign up at the MCOM bulletin board, located on the ground floor of Fine Arts. To open the concert, we will have a performance by the Brass Methods Class and a mystery double bass trio piece. Second, t-shirt order forms are available outside the Recital Hall during forum.
A few things we are planning: we are going to try to finish up the bulletin boards relatively soon. We will be planning the time to finish them in our upcoming meeting on Wednesday March 6. Also, we are going to plan a Practice-a-thon for April. Stay tuned and come to the meetings to give your input!

Weekly MCOM Update 2/12/11

Hey all!

It appears that the 5:20 time for Music Council of Majors weekly meeting works for very few people. Now, for a student organization, we are going to need students to be able to attend. SO, I have made an executive decision to move the meeting to 12:30 on Wednesdays outside of the Recital Hall (that's free hour, plus it gives you time to grab some grub :-)

Can't wait to see your beautiful faces!

-Organizing run-out concerts (the next one is next Friday!)
-improving the Fine Arts bulletin boards
-Planning Orchestra Day for Fall 2011

Come to have your voice heard, help out, and hang out with the most awesome music majors in the department!

Your "Prez",

Weekly MCOM Update

bassbuddy — Mon, 10/25/2010 - 16:32

Hi all!

This is your Music Council of Majors President, writing to inform you of the new and exciting happenings pertaining to MCOM. I will be writing these updates once a week to let you know what is going on with MCOM, so that even if you are unable to attend the meetings you can still know what is going on.
We are working on a few projects that I will outline here. First, we are planning to fix up the bulletin boards on the ground floor of Fine Arts and outside the Recital Hall. In a couple of weeks MCOM will be hosting an event open to anyone to put up all the new material. If you are interested in helping to design the bulletin boards, please e-mail Yoshi Horiguchi at hyoshi1@umbc.edu.
Also, we are receiving funding from the SGA for T-shirts for the members of MCOM. Julian (the designer of this website) has created a design and will be placing the order soon. We will also be creating an order form for music majors for UMBC Music Department t-shirts.

Minutes and Blog

julianbrezon — Mon, 10/25/2010 - 15:20

Since we have been concocting some wonderful ideas for this blog page during the MCoM Meetings, minutes will no longer be posted here - only under the MCoM tab, if you want to see what we're talking about. Hopefully soon, the front page will contain features such as articles, spotlights, and other cool stuff.

MInutes October 6

julianbrezon — Wed, 10/06/2010 - 13:31

2:04: We are approved! Money!
Jason: We can ask for money now. For events, stuff. We can ask for quite a bit, but need a reason. They will meet and decide. On-campus, campus-wide events are more likely to be funded. <1000 2 weeks notice, etc. up to 3k, and above 3k. <$500, only treasurer has to come. Can’t request funding for train fair in so many miles. Food requests are common, events shouldn’t be about food. Keep receipts etc.
2:11: T-Shirts will cost about $10. We will have an order form first, then order shirts. Spotlight, Connie Email. T-Shirt design! Ordering extra shirts is an option.
2:22: Advertising. Julian spoke to SEB: cosponsorship.
2:25: Money for Villanova type stuff? It helps UMBC look good. Taking small ensembles around to various high schools.
2:26: Suggestion box is in the works.
2:27 Bulletin Board. We need to convene and work on them.

Meeting Minutes 9-29-2010

julianbrezon — Mon, 10/04/2010 - 15:43

2:01 Opening
2:04 Suggestion Box. Decorated, perhaps to match bulletin boards? Have sheets and a pencil. Cull them on the way in to MCoM, bring up good suggestions from students. This box could be stored backstage and brought out for all events in FA118.
2:06 Events/Field Trip(?) Committee. Plan events, get permission etc., advertise said events and work with advertising committee. "Under $20" events and trips.
2:08 Advertising Committee. Talk to SEB/Commonvision. (This has been done!)
2:09 Bulletin Board Committee: Drs.Richards, Caracciolo. Create a template for the rest of the boards with the same type of design. Eight-ish people to go ahead and finish the rest of them.
2:14 Assignments - Allocation of various responsibilities to committee leaders.
2:25 Meeting Adjourned

Other topics discussed:
-A weekly interview/article type thing for this blog? That'd be way more interesting than occasional announcements and meeting minutes!

Books

julianbrezon — Thu, 09/02/2010 - 10:07

Today Dr. Cella sent out an email requesting that any students with used Berkowitz books email her. I'd like to invite people to trade other books (such as Keyboarding and Theory) on the forums here, or through email. You can post a request or an offer. This could save many of us time and money!

Thanks!

julianbrezon — Mon, 04/12/2010 - 07:56

Though we would have liked to see more people, the recital hall cleanup went very well! We scrubbed some chairs, reorganized the green room and backstage area, cleaned all the doors and windows in the lobby area, and we will be painting on Tuesday night. Thanks to everyone who showed up!

Profile Pictures

julianbrezon — Sat, 01/30/2010 - 19:41

Dr. Caracciolo was speaking to me after Forum on Wednesday, and suggested that the Member List might be more useful if everyone set their profile image to a face shot of themselves. There may be a way to have them visible on the list itself, but currently, they do appear on your profile page when your name is clicked on.

Comments/Ideas appreciated.

Welcome

julianbrezon — Mon, 01/04/2010 - 12:56

Connie Bailey today sent out an e-mail inviting all in the department to the website. Coincidentally, some spambots made accounts here 2 days ago, so I added a math problem captcha to the User Registration form.

If you have problems making an account, email me at

You can now have an image on your profile. Settings are in "My Account." The size limit is roughly the same as a facebook profile picture. If you choose to use one, it's visible (for now) only on your profile, accessed by clicking your name on the List of Members.

Theme

julianbrezon — Mon, 12/21/2009 - 00:20

That was easier than I thought. The site now looks and functions basically as it is supposed to. Now we just need to get as many people as possible registered and on the List. Comments are appreciated. Feel free to post them as replies to this news post.

New Theme

julianbrezon — Sun, 12/20/2009 - 19:43

The site functions almost exactly as it should in its final state. However, the theme is super under-construction. I hope to finish it over winter break, so check back now and then, it should get nicer looking throughout January.

What's going on?

julianbrezon — Thu, 12/17/2009 - 21:32

This website aims to connect UMBC musicians throughout the department by making it easy to find people and events.

Right now the calendar works fine, but I've only added one event, as it is the only event left in the semester according to the calendar on the official UMBC Music page. The calendar here will include events not only officially recognized by the department, but also any other music-related events happening on or off campus. Soon, there will be a form where users can request an event to be added to the calendar by a moderator.

The F.A.Q. page is a blank canvas. If there's anything you wish you'd known about as a Freshman, contact me and a moderator or myself will add it to the page.

The "Collaborate" page will soon be a discussion board where you will be able to posts ads looking for fellow musicians, a recording tech, people to play your composition, or anything else where such a way of finding people would be handy. Basically a "Classified Ads" section for use within the UMBC Music Department.

Anything considered news-worthy will make it to this page, and I am working on a way for users to be able to suggest items for the front page.
The site currently is using a default template, I have a complete visual mockup of the final design prepared, and I will work on implementing the
custom design throughout the semester break.

Anyone interested in helping moderate the calendar or F.A.Q. page or the site itself should contact me by way of E-mail or Facebook.

julianbrezon [AT] gmail [DOT] com

Regards,
Julian Brezon

TL;DR Version: This site is to help music students collaborate. E-mail me if you want to help or if you'd like to comment or ask for more information. Changes will be happening and the site should be fully functional by the Spring Semester
